It Started With a Boot Falling Apart in My Office
It was a Tuesday morning in October 2023 when one of our crew leaders walked into my office holding half of a boot. The sole had separated from the upper on a pair that was barely five months old. "This is the fourth pair this quarter," he said. I stared at the spreadsheet on my screen—the one where I'd proudly selected the "lowest cost" vendor—and felt my stomach drop.
That moment kicked off an 18-month evaluation that ended up changing how our entire company buys safety footwear. This is my honest Timberland Pro work boots review, written from the perspective of the person who tracks every dollar.

I also want to acknowledge: other brands exist. I haven't run an apples-to-apples comparison with Red Wing or Thorogood in our operation, so I can't offer data there. Their loyal followings are probably earned. I can only speak to what happened in our specific context.
What I'd Tell Another Procurement Manager
Three lessons, in order:
- Track cost per wear-month, not cost per pair. The question everyone asks is "what's the best price?" The question they should ask is "what does each month of actual use cost?" Those are very different numbers.
- Phase the rollout. You don't have to replace the entire fleet in one quarter. Start with the highest-risk roles and expand from there once the data supports it.
- Talk to the people wearing the boots. The first time I brought crew feedback into a purchasing decision, my "cheap = smart" strategy fell apart. The guys spending 10-hour days on concrete knew exactly what I didn't.
The boot review also changed how I approach the rest of the PPE budget.
