Back in 2020, when I took over purchasing for our company, I had a simple rule: cheapest approved safety boot, no exceptions. The new approach is to define the hazard for each job and match the boot to it. That might mean a $200 boot for one crew and a $90 composite-toe shoe for another. The goal is the right cost, not the lowest price.
And I’ll be honest: I didn’t always do this well. In 2022, we had a sudden contract award, and I had two hours to lock in a boot spec for the bid. Normally I’d run field tests and check with our safety officer. No time. I went with a brand I trusted. In hindsight, I should have pushed for a 48-hour window. But given what I knew then, it was the best call I could make.
If I could redo my early purchasing years, I’d start by asking crews what they actually wear and why. I’d look at lifetime cost, not sticker price. And I’d be quicker to test new options instead of defaulting to the cheapest acceptable product.
Honestly, I’m still not sure why so many procurement teams rely on “lowest bid” for PPE. My best guess is that it’s a metric that’s easy to report. But it’s a metric that gets the wrong result. This isn’t a knock on finance—it’s a reality of how purchasing has changed.
What Hasn’t Changed
The fundamentals still matter: protection, comfort, durability. Those haven’t moved. But the way you deliver them has. You no longer have to choose between safety and comfort, or between price and performance. The market has moved forward. If your boot spec hasn’t, you’re behind.
